Back soon with a few picks. Like some later today. Going to eat lunch and have a few shots of Wisky.

    Six-pack for Saturday

-- How many dont give a rat's ass about the World Cup, no matter how much ESPN shoves it down our throats? Permanent mute status awaits for many. Although I personally kind of enjoyed it a few years ago. Lots of drama and excitement for a 1-0 game. Just wish they would open up the scoring with the off sides bullshit.

-- Did you know tailgating is illegal in Canada? Why?

-- It seems unfair that a team as bad as the Nets has Marv Albert as its TV announcer; John Sterling would be a much better choice.

-- Pitt led New Hampshire 15-7 at the half Friday, lowest scoring half in a college basketball game since they put the shot clock in.

-- Notre Dame declined chance to go to a bowl game this year, costing us a chance to make some money by betting against them. Bastards.

-- Dick Enberg will broadcast 100+ Padre games on TV next summer; good news for me, anyone else with Extra Innings package. Oh my!!!!!

Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts from a cluttered mind.....

    13) I wonder what John Daly thinks of TigerGate.

    12) Oakland's Shane Lechler has a chance to break the all-time punting record this year. He is averaging 51.9 yards/boot, half a yard ahead of the old record, and I mean old, held by the Redskins' great Sammy Baugh.

    11) Dallas Cowboys are 18-34 in their last 52 December games.

    10) Good thing Rex Ryan brought Joe Girardi in to teach Marc Sanchez how to slide. Sanchez hurt his knee Thursday night running the ball.

    9) By the way, just for information purposes, the NFL Media Guide tells us the Jets have 22 assistant coaches (including three strength and conditioning guys). None of them could teach Sanchez how to slide?

    8) Speaking of the Jets, they released a QB last spring who has thrown 24 TDs with only three INTs this season. THEY RELEASED HIM!!!! How has the general manager of the Jets not been fired? Yeah I am not a Jets fan.

    7) Houston Cougars' Case Keenum has thrown 38 TDs this season with only six INTs. yet isn't even mentioned for the Heisman Trophy. Those six INTs must have been very costly.

    6) The 1972-73 Philly 76ers went 9-73, worst record in NBA history; they must be pretty excited with Nets starting out 0-18. Misery loves company. They could be breaking out champagne in April.

    5) Should the 18-0 Colts play the 18-0 Saints in the Super Bowl, ironic that the game would be in Miami, since the old '72 Dolphins guard their place in history so tightly. Doubt it'll happen, since Colts figure to sit Peyton Manning a lot once they clinch home field in AFC playoffs.

    4) Why is the Pac-10 down in hoop? Of the 15 players on all-freshman team in Pac-10 the last three years, only three are still in college.

    3) There are 61 Canadians, 39 Australians playing D-I college hoop this season, the most of any other country.

    2) Football was not meant to be played on three days' rest, which is big reason why the NFL's Thursday games haven't been very interesting.

    1) Its been twenty years since a Pac 10 team played an SEC team in a bowl game. Is this the year that streak gets broken? Lets hope so.

Spooky's helpful tips for Saturday, December 5

    Wall-flower

The two winningest teams in college basketball history collide when North Carolina and Kentucky meet on the hardcourt Saturday.

Wildcats’ freshman phenom John Wall is a Raleigh native and will get the chance to showcase his talents to the school that missed out on his recruiting sweepstakes.

The defending national champions have owned this series in recent years, winning the last five meetings and going 5-0 ATS during that stretch.

Both of these teams average more than 80 points per outing and with a multitude of scouts expected to be on hand, these players will be looking to light up the scoreboard.

Kentucky forward Patrick Patterson returned from an ankle injury last game, contributing 17 points and nine rebounds, and is expected to play against the Tar Heels.

Oddsmakers have installed the Wildcats as a 3-point favorite with a total of 152.

    The Great Grigsby

Arizona tailback Nic Grigsby is listed as doubtful for the game against USC due to a shoulder injury he’s been battling all season. Grigsby saw limited action in the overtime loss to Oregon, but sat on the sidelines last week against Arizona State.

Keola Antolin picked up the slack in the win over the Sun Devils, rushing for 79 yards and a score on seven carries. The sophomore has averaged 8.1 yards per carry over his last five games.

Despite the disparity in playing level between these two teams during the last decade, Arizona has gone 7-3 ATS in the last 10 games of this series. The Wildcats have gone 4-0 ATS during the last four seasons and have never been less than a 14-point underdog during that span.

The line opened at 7 in favor of the Trojans and the total has dropped from 51 to 49.5.

    Oden to joy

The Trailblazers could be without both of their big men when they face the Rockets on Saturday. Houston has won three in a row during its recent road trip while Portland has lost three straight.

Greg Oden missed most of Friday’s practice with a sprained ankle, but the center said he hopes to play on Saturday. LaMarcus Aldridge was unexpectedly absent from the starting lineup in Tuesday’s home loss to the Heat. He missed all of practice on Friday with a right knee injury and is questionable for the game.

The Trailblazers have been giving up 107.0 ppg during their three-game slide, but will look to get back on track against a Houston team that has averaged 99.2 ppg over its last five outings.

The Rockets have gone under the total in their last four games and the under is 5-1 during the last six meetings of this series.

    Lightning doesn’t strike

Goals have come at a premium for the Lightning during the last week.

In Tampa Bay’s last four games, the team has been shutout once and netted the puck at a 1.5 gpg average.

The Islanders haven’t been offensive juggernauts either. New York is posting a menial 2.3 gpg during its last four outings.

Tampa Bay has played to the under in two straight while the Islanders have gone under in six of their last eight games. The under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings of this series.

The Lightning are favored at -120 with the total set at 5.5.

    Notable quotable

“I'm sitting at my desk watching them, there's just no movement. And you start talking about…I mean, gigantic human beings. Our strength is really the interior offensive line. I think it will be a good matchup. The big issue is how much movement (we can get).”

-- Florida head coach Urban Meyer on Alabama defensive players Terrence “Mount” Cody and Rolando McClain.

Weekend List of 13: Wrapping up a busy sports Saturday.......

Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a busy sports Saturday.......

    13) Kicker named Hunter Lawrence drilled a 46-yard FG on last play of game, after officials used replay to put 0:01 back on clock, giving Texas a tense 13-12 win over Nebraska and a spot in the national title game. No one could have bitched too loudly had they not put that second back on the clock-- it was that close a decision.

    12) Lawrence's boot saves Colt McCoy from being the goat, as horrible clock management on last drive came this close to sending Longhorns into infamy for screwing up the final drive. It also saves the BCS from having to explain why Alabama was playing whomever would have wound up as the other team in the national title game. The system was saved from being exposed for what it is; a corrupt white elephant.

    11) Cornhuskers came within an eyelash of winning a game where they gained 106 total yards on 55 plays, with five first downs. Ouch.

    10) Cincinnati finishes regular season 12-0 with a thrilling 45-44 win at Heinz Field; Bearcats trailed 31-10 at one point late in 2nd quarter. This is second time in last four games Cincy won game after giving up more than 40 points. I wouldn't have a problem voting for their WR Gilyard as one of the top three Heisman Trophy finalists; he is that good.

    9) Bottom line though, I'd vote for the Spiller kid from Clemson to win the Heisman, with Ingram of Alabama second and Gilyard third.

    8) Houston's Case Keenum was 56-75 passing for 527 yards in a 38-32 loss at East Carolina in the Conference USA title game. It is hard to win at any level of football when you're minus-3 in turnovers.

    7) Former Nebraska QB Turner Gill, now coach at Buffalo, is said to be the frontrunner for the Kansas Jayhawks' vacant head coaching job.

    6) Illinois scored 52 points Saturday.....and lost 53-52. Fresno scored on a 19-yard pass with 0:02 left; instead of kicking the tying PAT and going to OT, Pat Hill went for two, and went back home with a win.

    5) USC lost at home to Arizona, finished 6th in the Pac-10. Wow. How does Pete Carroll get them up to play in a bowl in San Francisco or San Jose or Tucson? Answer: He probably won't be able to do it.

    4) Providence, Marquette both lost non-league games after leading by a double-digit margin at halftime. Friars lost to bitter rival Rhode Island.

    3) Pac-10 now trails Big 12 6-2 after K-State, Missouri won easily and Cal Bears waxed Iowa State Cyclones. Pac-10 is really struggling.

    2) Turner kid from Ohio State hurt his back falling after a dunk and will be out for 6-8 weeks, a very damaging loss for the Buckeyes.

    1) Handicapping Tip of the Week: When there is a big game, and one of the star players is scratched because he got a DUI during the week, it is always smart to go against that team (goes double for college games and triple if the suspended kid's team is favored to win).

A nice day and a nice week once again. Did some damage on the tracker as well so all is well that ended well.

Heading out of town this week for my son's college graduation to celebrate his attaining his masters so will continue this thread and will not be around much late in the week except for next Sunday when I will be back home.

    Your loss.

    Monday six-pack

-- It sucks that Boise State is playing TCU in a bowl; the big boys are too gutless to play either of these unbeaten upstarts.

-- Bowl people arranged a Florida State-West Virginia bowl game that will be Bobby Bowden's going away party; what does it say that the powers-that-be can arrange a game like this? The system is corrupt.

-- Florida coach Urban Meyer was hospitalized for dehydration after his Gators lost to Alabama in Atlanta Saturday.

-- No truth to rumor Vikings have hired Darrell Waltrip as offensive coordinator, after a second Viking was clocked going over 100 mph. First Adrian Peterson, now Bernard Berrian. Hire chauffeurs, fellas.

-- NFL stadiums that also host high school/college games should have to use FieldTurf playing surfaces instead of grass.

-- Portland Trailblazers once drafted injury-prone Sam Bowie ahead of Michael Jordan; only thing Bowie did better than Jordan was break his bones. Now Blazers have Greg Oden, drafted ahead of Kevin Durant. Oden tore his knee up this weekend, is done for the season. Sad thing.

Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday..........

    13) Vegas took Patriot-Dolphin game off the board for an hour during the week because of a rumor about Tom Brady being hurt. At one point in third quarter Sunday, Brady was 14-15 for 277 yards, with two TDs passing. So much for being injured. Still, if you bet Miami based on that inaccurate rumor, you won. Go figure.

    12) Only four weeks left in the season, and Patriots still haven't won a road game (0-5). They beat the Bucs in London, a neutral site game, but hard to believe they haven't won yet in a true road game.

    11) 17 of Jay Cutler's 20 interceptions have come on the road.

    10) Buccaneers had six points, five INTs at Carolina. Tampa Bay had ball inside Panthers' 20-yard line four times, scored only three points.

    9) Michael Vick threw a TD, ran for a TD as Eagles crushed Atlanta in Vick's homecoming game. Will be interesting to see who the Eagles can bamboozle into taking Vick off their hands this winter.

    8) If you watched Bruce Gradkowski play in Pittsburgh, you'd wonder how the hell he was ever playing behind JaMarcus Russell, and if you didn't know the standings and watched the Raiders upset the Steelers, you'd be shocked to find out they're 4-8.

    7) Raiders trailed 10-6 after three quarters in Pittsburgh; they had ball three times in fourth quarter, gaining 229 yards on 24 plays with three TDs, as Steeler secondary turned Bruce Gradkowski into Ken Stabler.

    6) New England had ball in red zone three times, and scored one TD, as Brady threw an end zone pick with Patriots up 21-19, after they failed to run for a first down in first half when leading by seven points. Tough year for the Patriots' coach as a game manager.

    5) Chargers averaged 14.3 yards per pass, Patriots 12.1 and the Steelers 10.8, but none of them covered, and only San Diego won.
    4) Giants had scoring plays of 21-74-79 yards as they awoke from their slumber to beat the Cowboys 31-24. Dallas is now 18-35 in its last 53 December games; they led 10-0 late in second quarter before giving up a pair of TDs in a 1:27 span that turned the game around.

    3) Chiefs averaged just 2.8 yards/pass, completed only 16-43 thru the air in a hideous 44-13 home loss to Denver. Losses like that make it unclear if they've made any progress at all this season.

    2) Best game of day was Saints' wild 33-30 OT win at Washington, in a game that saw Redskins drive inside Saints' red zone seven times out of 10 times with ball (three TDs, 3-4 on FGs). Suisham missed a 23-yard FG with 1:53 left, which gave Saints a chance to tie, which they quickly did, then Sellers lost a fumble in OT that set up Saints' winning kick.

    1) Check out SportsCenter for highlights of the Meachem TD at end of the half for the Saints; Brees threw an INT, but then Meachem stole ball out of the defender's hands and ran in for an unlikely TD. Turns out it was the difference in the game, a very bizarre, exciting game.
