Happy Canada Day everyone.
Having been frustrated in their pursuit of Felipe Melo, Arsenal will go head to head with Tottenham for the signature of Marseille midfielder Loik Cana. Daily Express
Arsenal was never going to sign Melo. It’s simply not their style to sign a player when his value reaches the highest point. Coming off his performance for Brazil in the Confederations Cup and leading Fiorentina to the Champions League. Besides he did sign an extension on his Fiorentina contract which should kill any future rumours of Melo going elsewhere for at least six months.
Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce will offer former Everton winger Andy van der Meyde, who is currently without a club, the chance to resurrect his career at Ewood Park. (The Sun)
Blackburn is interested in picking up all of Everton’s scrapes it seems. First is was little used defender Lars Jacobsen and now van der Meyde is on Sam Allardyce’s radar.
Or it may be that Lyon’s Karim Benzema is next on United manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s list of priorities at Old Trafford, with the France international forward’s team-mate Miralem Pjanic claiming a £38m move is in the offing. The Times
After securing Wigan’s Antonio Valencia, Manchester United could now bolster their forward line with a move for £11m-rated Toulouse forward Andre-Pierre Gignac. The Star
Love to see the reactions on a United fans face if they announced the signing of Andre-Pierre Gignac when they’ve been hopefully of a Benzema signing for the last 12 months. Pjanic is only 19, wouldn’t exactly trust him as a great source of insider information. He will be a player to watch out for in a year or two however.
Brazilian forward Jo will return to Everton on loan next season, with Manchester City boss Mark Hughes unable to promise him a regular first-team place. The Sun
Don’t understand the upside to letting Jo go out on loan yet again to a division rival. Might as well sell him and if City can’t recoup the transfer fee they paid for him last year, loan him out to another European club then.
Aston Villa are keeping tabs on Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos as well as fellow defenders Sylvain Distin of Portsmouth and David Wheater of Middlesbrough. (Daily Mail)
I’m sure Senderos is happy to know someone is interested in him cause it appears Arsenal isn’t.
Blackburn’s South Africa striker Benni McCarthy is concerned that a lack of first-team games may be harming his chances of appearing for the host nation in next summer’s World Cup and may move to Spanish side Celta Vigo. Daily Mirror
McCarthy’s attitude is harming his chances of being called up for next year’s World Cup the most.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says that the chance to develop the young players at the Gunners convinced him to stay at the Emirates rather than join big-spending Real Madrid. Daily Mirror
Why go to Madrid where your midfield can consist of Ronaldo and Kaka when you can stay at Arsenal and coach Denílson and Alexandre Song?
Seriously it’s good to see loyalty being displayed. There is a lot of things I've say bad about Wenger but English football wouldn’t be what it is today if he didn’t turn it on it’s head soon after he arrived in 1996.
