my kid's basketball team that i've been coaching for the last 2 years won both of it's games today and can win the tournament championship with a win on sunday.
we've been slowly improving, lately getting trophies for 3rd place (3 of the last 4 tournaments). now we've gotten into the championship game.

My son turns 5 soon so i am getting prepared for the next 6-10 years of organized sports. My son is very active so he is looking forward to it also. Cant start them to young.
if you're going to coach, be prepared to deal with some crazy fucking parents. the kids are fine, but their parents will drive you nuts. you'll get tons of unsolicitaded advice, especially about playing time. you'll have people that you've always been friendly with report you because you had the audacity to sit their kid when he was clearly overmatched. they'll try to undermine your authority. some will actually stop talking
to you, well after the season ends.
think of all the things that they could learn, leadership, conflict resolution, how to be fair, how to compromise, how to get along with each other, respect, etc
all things that young teens should have mastered, but their parents do for them.
my son has been on several sports teams, some where he was one of the top players, others where he was on the bench. if he complained to me about his lack of playing time, i refused to advocate on his behalf to the coach for more time,
instead i told him to get his ass to the gym and earn his playing time, sometimes
he actually was able to work himself into the rotation, and he felt very good about his accomplishment.
Thanks for the advice guys.
