Sen. Barney Frank went on The Tonight Show on Tuesday night and gave a virtual clinic on the common sense rationale behind lifting the prohibition on online poker in the US, painting it as both a matter of personal freedoms (for the individual) and a potential revenue source (for the state). Jay Leno did his best devil’s advocate by repeating tired clichés about gamblers using their credit cards until they’d gone bankrupt and how limiting gambling to Las Vegas was better because you had to ‘cross a desert’ to reach it. Battling Barney calmly corrected Jay on the credit card issue, then reminded him that gambling is in virtually every state now. Jay doubled down by saying gamblers would still “have to move” to get to a physical casino, so clearly Jay thinks we can eliminate obesity by banning pizza deliveries. Worth watching (poker talk starts about the 3:48 mark).
