The World Can Always Use A Few More Spiderman Movies........maybe Another Rocky Also........
Columia Pictures has officially given the go ahead for two more 'Spider-Man' films. The studio has also announced that Tobey Maguire and director Sam Raimi will return for the fourth and five installments of the comic book franchise. And although the fate of Kirsten Dunst [photos] hasn't been confirmed at this point, she will likely return to reprise her role as Mary Jane Watson now that the key players are locked up.
Rumors had been floating around ever since the third installment that Tobey Maguire could be replaced for the fourth flick, but a studio spokesman has confirmed that was never the case and the studio "never considered any other actor."
We're also hearing that since the next two installments have been green-lighted, Columbia is considering shooting the films back-to-back to save production costs. Much in the way New Line did with the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy.
Although some were less than pleased with 'Spider-Man 3', the spider is still Columbia's most successful franchise, and if it weren't for the 'Dark Knight', the last installment would still hold the record for the biggest opening weekend to date so the move isn't too surprising.
The fourth movie is currently aiming for a May 2011 release.
