INDIANAPOLIS -- Welcome to your worst nightmare, Dookies.
Day of the national championship game, your coach about to tie Adolph Rupp for the second most titles ever, one of the most glorious days in school history.
Leave it to the New Jersey Nets and a Russian billionaire to muck it up. This report on NorthJersey.com says that the Nets are prepared to make Mike Krzyzewski an offer to coach the team. The offer, reportedly, will be worth $12-$15 million per year and might include GM duties. That dwarfs the $8-million-per-year offer Coach K got a few years ago from the Lakers.
It also has to be disturbing that Krzyzewski waxed nostalgic Sunday when talking about the Lakers' interest.
"I was more than tempted [to go]," Krzyzewski said. "I seriously considered it. One, because it was the Lakers ... It would have been an opportunity to work with Kobe. He and I are very close."
His boss in New Jersey would be Mikhail Prokhorov, that Russian billionaire. His purchase of the Nets is expected to be approved later this month. You can read more about Prokhorov here.
Coach K refuted rumors in February that the Nets were interested in him.
"The guy's Russian, right?" Krzyzewski said. "You think he'd hire a Polish guy?"
"No one's contacted me, and if they do, I think 'nyet' would be easy for me to say," he added two months ago.
The difference this time is that there is more specific information. All this adds up to at least a temporary nightmare for Duke. a Duke spokesman said Monday morning there would be no response to the story. However, Krzyzewski will have to comment on the story, it seems, if not before the game, then certainly after and possibly in an uncomfortable situation following a loss.
Does this distract K and the Blue Devils for tonight? In a weird way, it does point out another difference in the two programs. Butler coach Brad Stevens' name has popped up at Oregon. Krzyzewski is being courted by a Russian magnate. Sounds about right.

WASHINGTON — Mike Krzyzewski remains the Nets’ top choice to be their next head coach.
Incoming billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov is prepared to make Krzyzewski an offer that would be difficult to refuse, league sources said.
Krzyzewski turned down a five-year, $40 million offer to coach Kobe Bryant and the Lakers in 2004. The Nets’ offer likely will be between $12 million and $15 million per season for Krzyzewski to be their coach and perhaps general manager, a source said.
If Prokhorov gets his way this off-season, Krzyzewski could be coaching his final game for Duke tonight when the Blue Devils face Butler for the NCAA championship.
Krzyzewski has been reluctant to leave Duke. But if the Blue Devils beat Butler and Krzyzewski wins his fourth national championship, it could help the Nets’ chances. He would be able to leave on top and tackle new challenges.
Prokhorov’s purchase of the Nets should be approved by the NBA Board of Governors on April 16. It’s expected he will waste little time to make an impact. He’s targeted Krzyzewski to accomplish that.
Despite the Nets’ 11-66 record after their 109-99 loss Sunday to Washington, their coaching vacancy should be a hot job this off-season.
The Nets have talented young players in Brook Lopez, Devin Harris, Courtney Lee and Terrence Williams, three draft picks – including one of the top four at this point — and about $23 million for free agency. They also will have an owner with the resources and the will to turn the Nets into a winner.
“You’ve got a high-profile owner who is going to want a high-profile coach,” an NBA executive said.
Krzyzewski’s coaching ability is undeniable. He also would be a major asset for this critical off-season.
His knowledge of the college players would help the Nets in the draft. Also, as coach of the U.S. men’s national team, Krzyzewski has relationships with many stars who will be free agents this summer. The Nets are expected to pursue the likes of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Amar’e Stoudemire and Carlos Boozer.
The Nets’ interest in Krzyzewski first was reported in the Herald News in February. At the time Krzyzewski said he wasn’t interested in them.
“No one’s contacted me,” Krzyzewski said then. “If they do, I think ‘nyet’ would be easy for me to say.”
Prokhorov apparently plans to make it difficult to say nyet.
But if Krzyzewski refuses the Nets’ advances once the basketball season is over and they’re forced to go to Plan B, they’re expected to look to former NBA coaches Jeff Van Gundy and Avery Johnson and current college coaches Jay Wright of Villanova and Michigan State’s Tom Izzo.
Nets president Rod Thorn has been relatively quiet about the potential coaching search and his future. He’s in the last year of his contract, but Thorn is expected to return. After Prokhorov officially takes charge, an announcement is expected.
Interim coach and general manager Kiki Vandeweghe isn’t expected back, especially if the Nets plan to offer Krzyzewski dual titles. There also have been reports from Russia that Prokhorov will hire Andrey Vutatin, the president of CSKA Moscow of the European League, to join the Nets’ management team.
BRIEFS: The 66 losses is a Nets’ franchise high. … Lopez and Harris each scored 22 points. Nets’ killer Andray Blatche, a 6-foot-11 forward, had 20 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds.

I dont see this happening before July. Coach K probably wouldnt go unless Lebron was there and I think they might be a player for Lebron if they get Coach K. I dont see anyway Coach K goes there without one or two top flight guys, cause theres shit there now. He wont get the calls hes used to getting at Duke. The grass is hardly ever greener
