The latest news out of Oregon, again not of the good variety, extends a recent streak of disturbing off-field incidents. Blog
According to a filing on the Lane County Sheriff's Office's Web site, James was booked by Springfield, Ore., police at 3 a.m. local time Wednesday on charges of strangulation, assault and menacing.
The alleged victim was identified as James' girlfriend, according to Sgt. Tom Borchers of the Springfield police department. The incident occured at James' residence on Monday and was reported to police the following day, at which time a formal complaint was filed.
"She went to the house to talk to him and during that conversation there was an altercation," Borchers told ESPN.com's Ted Miller. "According to [the alleged victim], he placed his hands on her throat and applied pressure, resulting in a strangulation charge. Also during the altercation she was apparently forced to the ground or knocked to the ground and sustained some abrasions."
The woman did not require medical attention, according to Borchers.
James awaits an arraignment hearing at 4:30 p.m. ET, a jail spokesperson told Miller. Oregon spokesperson Dave Williford said he was unable to comment.
James, of Texarkana, Texas, stepped in as a starter for the Ducks when teammate LaGarrette Blount was suspended for throwing a postgame punch at a Boise State player.
James went on to lead Pac-10 champion Oregon with 1,546 rushing yards, second in the conference to Stanford's Toby Gerhart, and scored 14 touchdowns. James averaged 118.9 yards a game and received second-team All-Pac-10 honors.
