Extended Mike Leach Interview
Texas Tech head football athletic trainer Steve Pincock said Red Raiders receiver Adam James was placed in a "sports medicine garage" and media room as "big as a two-car garage" while recovering from a concussion, and was monitored by two trainers at all times.
Pincock's account of the incident, given in a statement to representatives of former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, contradicts James' version of events that led to Leach being fired Wednesday.
James, who is the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James, sustained a concussion on Dec. 16. He was examined the following day and told not to practice because of the injury and an elevated heart rate.
Pincock's statement was obtained by ESPN.com on Thursday night from Leach's representatives. Pincock refused further comment when reached on his cell phone in San Antonio, Texas, where the Red Raiders are preparing to play Michigan State in Saturday's Alamo Bowl.
A source told ESPN's Joe Schad that Leach called a trainer and directed him to move James "to the darkest place, to clean out the equipment and to make sure that he could not sit or lean. He was confined for three hours."
According to the source, Leach told the trainer, two days later, to "put [James] in the darkest, tightest spot. It was in an electrical closet, again, with a guard posted outside."
However, Pincock said James was initially placed in a "sports medicine garage, there is no lock on this building." Pincock said injured players are typically asked to perform exercises during practice, but "James could not participate in these drills, and was originally asked to walk around the field."
"Adam showed up to practice in street clothes, no team gear, and dark sunglasses," Pincock said, according to the statement. "Adam walked about 40 to 50 yards, very slowly and with a non-caring attitude."
Pincock said Leach then asked that James be moved to a location "where sunlight could not bother him as he was wearing sunglasses."
"I instructed Adam to stay in the garage and out of the sun, so the light would not worsen his condition," Pincock said in the statement. "While in the garage, Adam was walking around, eating ice, sitting on the ground, and, at one point, sleeping; at no point was there any enforcement to make Adam stand up."
Leach, during an on-air interview Thursday night with ESPN, said he had not suggested any place specific for James. "I said, find some place dark and one place was as good as the next, and that was close to the field, and plus they had the ice machine," Leach said.
Two days later, while the Red Raiders practiced at Jones AT&T Stadium, James was placed in a room that is used for postgame interviews involving opposing coaches and players. James told school officials he was placed in an electrical closet inside the room.
"I walked Adam to the room, which was at least as big as a two-car garage," Pincock wrote. "Inside the room there is an electrical closet. I looked in the closet and stated that there was 'no way that Adam would be placed in there.' I shut the door to the electrical closet, and it was never opened again. At no time during this practice was Adam ever placed in the electrical closet."
During Thursday's interview, Leach said he believed money was a motivating factor in his dismissal.
"Last year, they didn't want to pay the money [in contract negotiations]. Based on popular opinion and public pressure and things like that, they got in a position where, to save face, they had to give me a competitive contract, which they did," he said. "Then I think, whether it's for financial reasons or what, they decided not to follow through. Now essentially they're trying to steal the money."

Hopefully leach will never be a head coach again, maybe a coordinator or something - what decent player would choose to go to a team with a sadistic, psychopath as the head coach?
He has witnesses to refute everything James said.. he did nothing wrong and will win any lawsuit he brings against Texas Tech.... His dad was a meddler and didn't like Leach and they collaborated with the higher ups to get rid of him

He was fired for cause. No one at a big college will hire him - he'll end up at some small (middle tn) type school at best. Several tech players have come out saying their glad the clown is gone, good luck with that lawsuit.
By the way - I wonder how the big, bad, tough coach leach feels to have his career come tumbling down because of a lazy, whiny, little pussy like james... thats called charma!
No one will hire him?
Like stating no female will suck Bill Clinton's cock
We'll see if he's coaching in the fall doc, I say not as a head coach.
Mike... out of over 100 kids on the team and 85 Scholarship players you are going to have players who don't like the coach.... That is the bottom line... The kids running their Cocksuckers are the friends of James... No one else... No one with any self respect would comment on the situation as a player.... Only Craig James and his Son's Pussy Friends are saying things about Coach Leach
And Mark my Words... Within 2 years he will be the Head Coach of a Major College...be realisitic here... as I said before... Who are you going to believe a Head Coach with a 10+ year spotless record and other professionals on his side or a Rat Fink Pussified player and his Dad pissed over playing time and his Friends? He will win the lawsuit and he will Coach and Win at another Big Time School

Today, though, the Leach lovefest emphatically ended, in the most unlikely place: From his own team. When the media ban was lifted on current Raider players during their Alamo Bowl preparations in San Antonio, a few team spokesmen opened up with both barrels:
Defensive tackle Chris Perry, to ESPN: "I have no complaints about this decision. [Leach] put Adam [James] in a shed like an animal. Like an animal in a cage. That was bull. You call other players. I think it was a good decision. We have our pep back now. We practice hard this week. We had less stress this week. You know why? Because he's gone." (Emphasis added)
Wide receiver Tramain Swindall, to the Associated Press: "I'm supporting Adam and what he’s doing because it’s the right thing to do. And so do most of the players. It wasn’t just about Adam. It was always a negative vibe."
Cornerback Taylor Charbonnet, to ESPN: "The players make this team, not one coach. As Adam's friend, I didn't like it at all what [Leach] did. He was my brother and I didn't agree with it. I don't know why [Leach] did that. But I know we our fully behind [interim] coach Ruffin [McNeil]. We love him and support him."
Charbonnet's older brother, former Tech safety Daniel Charbonnet, updated his Facebook status to the same effect this afternoon: "For everyone who wants to know what happen [sic], you probably never will. The only thing you should know is Coach Leach and Coach Leach alone is responsible for this. I wish it wasn't like this." Combine that with the frustration on the team in September -- when veterans Marlon Williams and Brandon Carter used their Twitter accounts to vent over the team's 2-2 start and call out Leach for showing up late to a team meeting after back-to-back losses to Texas and Houston -- and it's not hard to piece together a much rougher year behind the scenes than we saw on the surface.
And if you add to that Leach's statement to the media, in which he accuses "individuals in the Texas Tech administration, Board of Regents and booster groups who have dealt in lies" of plotting his demise for months after last year's contentious contract negotiations, it's not hard to envision something like a powder keg waiting to blow. If so, the unraveling of the last year in Leach's inevitable lawsuit seems destined to become the most interesting recurring soap opera of the offseason.
He very well might get another decent job dirty - the above statements are very revealing however.
The fact of the matter is that the weak, lazy, james personally took it upon himself to bring down a tyrant - he succeeded ,and saved his team mates from the cancer that was eating away at their program. I expect some show of respect to honor james tomorrow.
The Above Statements Just Prove my POint... They admit they are his Friends... Sure they are going to support him.... you did nothing to Disprove my point... and you also go and get quotes from ESPN where his Daddy Works.... No Bias there is there?

And another thing... Leach gave one interview and that is all he will give... The statement from his Camp and who he has on his side will keep quiet... The James' and his Friends have to keep screaming to the Media to keep it in the limelight to keep public opinion on their side... Kinda Like Obama Yo Mama and his Agenda's... You keep screaming it enough then you finally start believing it yourself..... Leach will win his lawsuit and will have another Very Good coaching Job

Reports: Leach says he didn't mistreat player
By BETSY BLANEY
The Associated Press
4:46 p.m. Friday, January 1, 2010 LUBBOCK, Texas — Fired Texas Tech coach Mike Leach says he did not mistreat a player after a concussion.
Leach spoke to The New York Times and ESPN about his firing. He was dismissed Wednesday, two days after his suspension.
The school was investigating his treatment of Adam James. The sophomore receiver said Leach twice confined him to a small, dark place after his concussion diagnosis. Leach told the Times on Thursday night and ESPN on Friday that James was lazy and acted as if entitled to special treatment.
James' father is ESPN analyst Craig James. Leach contends Craig James tried to leverage his position as a way to get more playing time for his son.
Text messages by The Associated Press were not immediately returned by Leach. Nor was a phone message to interim head coach Ruffin McNeill and Leach attorney Ted Liggett.
Leach told the Times he ordered that James be taken "out of the light" and did not know specifically where he went. He also said "He was never locked anywhere. At no point was he locked anywhere."
The school fired Leach shortly before the two sides were to appear in court for a hearing on the coach's suspension. The hearing became moot once a termination letter was handed to him by an attorney with the university, Liggett said. He said a lawsuit would be forthcoming.
Texas Tech (8-4) plays Michigan State (6-6) in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday.
In interviews with the Times and ESPN, Leach described a divisive and tense relationship with Craig James, whom he said he had to deal with more than every other parent on the team combined. He said James frequently attended practices and called assistant coaches.
"I think he used his position at ESPN to try to coerce me into allowing Adam to play more," Leach told the Times. "But the thing about it is as the coach, I watch every inch of film. I'm deferring to the judgment of 12 people as we look at the film on who should play and who should play when and then we make our decision based on that. I don't feel like it's fair to the other players and I don't think it's the right way to do business to allow influence and position to dictate when you play a young man."
When Craig James was asked about those claims, he called them "absurd," ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz said.
Leach also told the Times that the release of a series of e-mail messages obtained by The Dallas Morning News proved that the university did not want him around. In one, a booster recommended to Tech administrators, "You should sign a contract that would not cost us too much to fire him."
"It's shocking to me that there's people working together that were trying to get me fired last year after an 11-1 regular season," Leach told the newspaper.
Lincoln Riley, Texas Tech's acting offensive coordinator, wrote and sent a letter harshly critical of Adam James letter to university officials Dec. 26, two days before Leach was suspended indefinitely. Riley wrote that James is the type of person who makes "excuses or blames people for things that go wrong in his life."
He declined to comment on the letter Thursday.
Riley, a former walk-on quarterback at Texas Tech who Leach made a student coach, flatly said "no" when asked if Leach ever put a player in danger. He declined to say whether he thought Leach got a fair shake.
Riley was among several current Texas Tech coaches and former players who wrote letters defending Leach last week to school administrators. The letters were obtained by CBSSports.com.

Leach said in a 38-minute phone interview late Thursday that James acted as if he were entitled to special treatment and that he was lazy. He also said the player and his family’s claims of mistreatment were the result of bitterness over a lack of playing time.
Leach said that he felt that James’s father, Craig James, tried to leverage his position as an ESPN analyst to get more playing time for his son.
It has been widely reported that Leach locked Adam James in a closet or a shed after James sustained a concussion at a practice last month. Leach said he only ordered James to be taken “out of the light” and did not know specifically where he had been taken.
“I was busy coaching practice,” Leach said.
He added: “There have been several things that have been brought to my attention on the ticker that’s just false,” Leach said, referring to ESPN’s bottom line ticker. “He was never locked anywhere. At no point was he locked anywhere. At no point was there an electrical closet.”
Leach described a divisive and tense relationship with Craig James, whom he said he had to deal with more than every other parent on the team combined. He said that James frequently attended practices and called assistant coaches.
“I think he used his position at ESPN to try to coerce me into allowing Adam to play more,” said Leach, who said he expected to coach again. “But the thing about it is as the coach, I watch every inch of film. I’m deferring to the judgment of 12 people as we look at the film on who should play and who should play when and then we make our decision based on that. I don’t feel like it’s fair to the other players and I don’t think it’s the right way to do business to allow influence and position to dictate when you play a young man.”
When Craig James was asked about those claims, he called them “absurd” and said he would “never go there,” according to Josh Krulewitz, an ESPN spokesman.
During an interview on “SportsCenter,” James said the family was feeling pressure from Tech fans.
“Absolutely. This isn’t something we asked for,” Craig James said. “We continue to be a victim of something. Our family is going through a lot right now, far more than we ever wanted to go through.”
The police in the town north of Dallas where the James family lives have beefed up patrols around the home because of threatening statements made online, The Associated Press has reported.
“Nothing has happened at the house, but everybody knows what’s occurred on the blogs over there, so it’s precautionary to the threats being made,” the Celina police chief, Joe Williams, said Thursday.
Leach said that Craig James called the assistant coach Lincoln Riley so often to lobby for playing time that they had a meeting with Adam James. They played him two of the messages and asked, “How would you feel if we went in there to the meeting room and we stuck speakers up and we played these two messages for the team?”
Leach added: “After that we didn’t get any more phone calls from Craig, but he did proceed to call administrators.”
Leach said that Craig James felt his son was not getting a fair shot and threatened to call the administration about it.
“He made it clear that he had a business relationship with our chancellor or certainly was in conversation about such things,” Leach said. “He made it clear that he was announcing this game or that. He always felt like we were leaving the best receiver on the team on the bench. It’s inconceivable that we’d ever want to do that or consider doing it.”
The Texas Tech head football trainer, Steve Pincock, supported Leach’s claims that he did not mistreat Adam James after his concussion.
“Adam was never locked in any facility, and was never placed in an electrical closet or tight space, or instructed to do so,” Pincock said in a statement.
Texas Tech said in its statement announcing Leach’s firing on Wednesday that Leach’s actions put James “at risk for additional injury.”
But Texas Tech’s team physician, Dr. Michael Phy, said in a statement,
“According to the information given to me, no additional risks or harm were imposed on Adam by what he was asked to do.”
Pincock said that Adam James showed up at practice after the concussion diagnosis in sunglasses and street clothes and showed a “noncaring” attitude when asked to walk around the field.
Pincock said the first place James was placed, which had been reported as a shed, was in fact an equipment garage. The lock on the garage was broken, he said.
“I instructed Adam to stay in the garage and out of the sun, so the light would not worsen his condition,” Pincock said. “While in the garage, Adam was walking around, eating ice, sitting on the ground, and, at one point, sleeping.”
He added: “Coach Leach asked that Adam be placed in a location where sunlight could not bother him, as he was wearing sunglasses. Two trainers, including myself, monitored Adam at all times.”
The second claim of mistreatment of James at practice had been reported as his being locked in a closet, which was a media room that Pincock said was never locked. There is a closet in the room, but James, Pincock said, was not instructed to go in there.
“At no time during this practice was Adam ever placed in the electrical closet,” Pincock said. “The door to the media room was never locked, and trainers attending to Adam stated that he was sitting at times during the practice.”
Leach said that the release of a series of e-mail messages obtained by The Dallas Morning News proved that the university did not want him around. In one, a booster recommended to Tech administrators, “You should sign a contract that would not cost us too much to fire him.”
“It’s shocking to me that there’s people working together that were trying to get me fired last year after an 11-1 regular season,” Leach said. He added: “I believe in everybody working together and that together we could all accomplish great things together, but then I discover that’s not the case and that the very foundation is crumbling out from under me. Betrayal’s really hard.”
Leach said he would like the relationships between some Texas Tech regents, university administrators and James to be examined.
Reached late Thursday, a Texas Tech spokeswoman, Sally Post, said that the university’s chancellor, Kent Hance, would respond Friday to Leach’s comments.

Myself, james and anybody else have nothing to prove to anybody. leach is gone, fired, and he's never coming back to abuse those poor players. Who knows what the future brings regarding coaching or some lawsuit that is doomed to fail. Leach was fired because he refused to agree to some guidlines that the administraors asked him to - when he did that he was insobordinate. Insubordination is just cause for firing.
It's over dirty - he's gone - live with it. God willing his name will become infamous for coaches who abuse power
