An amazing day in the Premiership saw Jose Mourinho throw his EPL winner?s medal into the crowd, Chelsea beating Manchester United, Wayne Rooney getting injured, Alan Curbishley resigning and Portsmouth staying up by beating Wigan. The latter also meant that Birmingham and West Brom will be playing in the Championship next year.
To unravel the developing of an incredible 24 hours, it seems fitting to begin with Champions Chelsea and the retaining of their title. The Blues beat second place Manchester United by three goals to nil.
Goals from Gallas, Joe Cole and Carvalho sealed the dream victory for Chelsea fans and provided a great way for the Blues to effectively end their season. By beating their nearest rivals 3-0, they send a message to the Premiership that they intend to dominate for some time.
However, the match was somewhat overshadowed by an injury to star striker Wayne Rooney, who will be out for six weeks with a broken metatarsal bone: as a result of the injury, youngster Rooney is a major doubt for the World Cup finals. As if that wasn?t memorable enough, after the match, Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho made a gesture of complacency by throwing his winner?s medal into the London crowd.
The main game of the day was an early kick-off; however, the afternoon games certainly did not disappoint. ?Harry Houdini? was in force again as Portsmouth beat Wigan 2-1 and condemned Birmingham and West Brom to relegation. This came after the shock announcement of Alan Curbishley resignation as manager of Charlton after over a decade at the club.
The announcement has lead to wide speculation about his future. Curbishley has been tipped as the next England manager and only time will tell if this was the driving force behind his resignation.
With two English clubs in European finals, the imminent announcement of the next England manager, the ever-closer World Cup finals and after the proceedings of today, there has never been a better time to be a football fan.
