Unbeaten Colts have books edgy
Perfect season, Super Bowl rout looking better
One step closer to perfection, Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts continue to put the hurt on opponents and put a scare into bookmakers.
An ugly scenario for most Las Vegas and offshore books would be for the Colts to finish the regular season 16-0 and win the Super Bowl in a blowout. That scenario is very realistic, too.
Indianapolis improved to 13-0 with a 26-18 victory over Jacksonville on Sunday, while most of the rest of the NFL's best teams were anything but impressive.
"The Colts are definitely a notch above everybody else, no doubt about it," MGM Mirage sports book director Robert Walker said. "They are just a monster, and the AFC is so much better than the NFC it's sad.
"I would like to see the NFC show something. I could see the Colts being 17-point favorites in the Super Bowl. It depends on who they play."
The AFC is a 12-point favorite in the Super Bowl at the Mirage and most books, but Walker said the line will likely rise.
About a month ago, several books posted a proposition bet on Indianapolis going undefeated in the regular season, with the odds against it happening as high as 9-1.
The public has piled on the Colts' side, and the odds are down to about 3-2.
Walker waited until recently to post the prop, but he said no bettors are going against the Colts.
"It's kind of a one-sided prop. The public is rooting for them to go undefeated," Walker said. "I would like to see it from a personal standpoint, but I've got to believe there are some (books) sweating it out."
Indianapolis also has been a popular bet on the futures board and is certain to get plenty of support in the playoffs.
Walker said Seattle, which has emerged as the NFC's top team at 11-2, could get some respect in the Super Bowl, as could the New York Giants.
"If you're betting the NFC right now, you're betting that somebody beats the Colts," Walker said.
Las Vegas books have endured a poor NFL season, but Week 14 was not as profitable for most bettors as underdogs were 9-5-1 against the spread.
That record counts the Colts as a loss.
They opened as 7 1/2-point favorites, but the line jumped to 9 and closed at 8 1/2 most places. The final margin of eight fell in the middle, a result that was "really bad for us," Walker said.
The books won major decisions, Walker said, when Carolina, Denver and the New York Giants failed to cover as favorites.
The bettors won big decisions by siding with Pittsburgh over Chicago and New England over Buffalo.
Miami pulled off a shocking upset, beating San Diego 23-21 as a 13 -point road underdog.
The Chargers, in danger of missing the playoffs, opened as 7 1/2-point underdogs at Indianapolis in the marquee game of Week 15.
