1. USC BCS Average: 0.9802 Previous Ranking: 1
The lead has widened a little bit with one of the computer polls giving USC the top spot. USC's offense opened it up full-throttle against Stanford to continue to solidify itself in the number one spot. The toughest test the team has faced over the last few year has been Cal, and even though Joe Ayoob and the Bear passing game has struggled a bit with its consistency, this should still be a test. Watch out for a rock-solid Fresno State team in a few weeks. UCLA's run defense had better figure something out in a hurry, or the crosstown rivalry game won't be pretty.
predicted wins: at California, Fresno State, UCLA
predicted losses: none
predicted record: 12-0
predicted bowl: Rose Bowl
2. Texas BCS Average: 0.9765 Previous Ranking: 2The grip on the computers is finally starting to loosen, and it's only going to drop from here on. However, there's still a healthy margin between UT and Alabama in the third slot. Texas beat Baylor 62-0 and could've made it 80 if it tried. It's not going to get a lot of national attention as a possible upset, but Kansas could provide some problems bringing the nation's number one run defense to Austin. Colorado is getting better and better, so a likely rematch in the Big 12 title game would be tougher than the 42-17 Longhorn win in October.
predicted wins: Kansas, at Texas A&M, Big 12 Championship
predicted losses: none
predicted record: 12-0
predicted bowl: Rose Bowl
3. Alabama BCS Average: 0.8814 Previous Ranking: 4
Miami might be the flavor of the moment, but Alabama can quickly change that with impressive wins over LSU and Auburn. In the third spot by a mere .0009 margin, there's no room for error. The offense might not be doing much of anything, but being unbeaten in the SEC could do wonders for the computers if the Tide goes 12-0. The Mike Shula's bunch won't crack the top two in the human polls, don't be surprised if the computers start to make this a lot closer than expected.
predicted wins: at Mississippi State, at Auburn
predicted losses: LSU
predicted record: 10-1
predicted bowl: Orange Bowl
4. Miami BCS Average: 0.8805 Previous Ranking: 6
The Canes are right in the hunt with a paper-thin distance from the number three spot. The dominating win at Virginia Tech has put Miami right in the mix for the national title needing a USC or Texas slip up to be in the mix, but don't assume an ACC championship quite yet. Georgia Tech and Virginia have nasty defenses that could give the Tyrone Moss-less Canes some problems, while a road trip to ake Forest could be tougher than expected.
predicted wins: Georgia Tech, at Wake Forest, Virginia, ACC Championship Game
predicted losses:
predicted record: 11-1
predicted bowl: Orange Bowl
5. Penn State BCS Average: 0.7759 Previous Ranking: 7On an island at the fifth spot, there's still a lot of work to be done, mostly with the humans, to move up any higher. The Nittany Lions have one step to go before being Big Ten champions: Michigan State. Watch out for the flaky Spartans to come up with a big performance at home, but if Joe Paterno can pull off the win, this will be one of the most coveted teams in the BCS picture.
predicted wins: none
predicted losses: at Michigan State
predicted record: 9-2
predicted bowl: Capital One Bowl
6. Virginia Tech BCS Average: 0.7540 Previous Ranking: 3Consider how ugly last week's loss to Miami was, this isn't much of a slip. Virginia Tech had a chance to make a big statement in the Rose Bowl race with everyone watching, and Marcus Vick and the rest of the team came up with a big dull dud. National title hopes are gone, but there's still a chance in the ACC title race needing to win out and Miami to lose again. The Hokies can't let down against Virginia or North Carolina.
predicted wins: at Virginia, North Carolina
predicted losses:
predicted record: 10-1
predicted bowl: Gator Bowl
7. LSU BCS Average: 0.6987 Previous Ranking: 8The easy games are over, and now LSU actually has to play someone. That's a good think considering the computers hate the Tigers. Beating Alabama would do wonders, but the loss to Tennessee hurts more and more in the computer polls as Phil Fulmer's team keeps losing. While the Tigers might not be able to overtake Miami as the top one-loss team, the could get very close if they win the SEC title; the human polls could give them a bump late in the game.
predicted wins:at Alabama, at Ole Miss, Arkansas, SEC Championship
predicted losses: none
predicted record: 11-1
predicted bowl: Sugar Bowl
8. Ohio State BCS Average: 0.6632 Previous Ranking: 10The Buckeye offense is humming at just the right time. The Big Ten title is still a possibility, but a BCS at-large berth is all but gone with the Miami win over Virginia Tech. There's just too much traffic ahead to get an at-large spot so if Penn State beats Michigan State and with Notre Dame looming, so look for the Buckeyes to hit a ceiling at around seventh in the final rankings if everything works out perfectly.
predicted wins: Northwestern, at Michigan
predicted losses: none
predicted record: 9-2
predicted bowl: Fiesta
9. Georgia BCS Average: 0.6313 Previous Ranking: 11Georgia didn't play this week and still moved up two spots. The Bulldogs are getting D.J. Shockley back just in time for a showdown with Auburn. There's little to no chance of getting to the Rose Bowl even with a few miracles, and an at-large bid is out of the question with another loss, so it's SEC title or bust for the BCS hopes.
predicted wins: Auburn, Kentucky
predicted losses: at Georgia Tech, SEC Championship Game
predicted record: 9-3
predicted bowl: Capital One Bowl
10. Oregon BCS Average: 0.6272 Previous Ranking: 13The win over Cal, along with losses by UCLA and Florida State, moved the Ducks into the top ten and in contention. The remaining schedule isn't all that bad, and there could be some help along the way if Arizona State beats UCLA, making Oregon's win in Tempe more impressive. With all the conference title games and other big showdowns ahead, the Ducks could move up into the top seven before all is said and done.
predicted wins: Oregon State
predicted losses: at Washington State
predicted record: 9-2
predicted bowl: Pacific Life Holiday Bowl
