Leestown, leading Louisiana sire, dead

Leestown, a perennial leading sire in Louisiana, was euthanized last week after breaking his shoulder, said Jay Adcock of Red River Farms in Coushatta, La. The horse, who stood at Red River, was 14.
Adcock said he found an injured Leestown in his paddock the morning of Dec. 2: "No fence down or anything. He was just standing there like he should have been, except he had a broken shoulder."
X-rays were taken and several veterinarians advised that the horse be euthanized. Leestown, who was owned by a syndicate, came to Red River in 2000.
"It's a big loss," said Adcock. "He was a franchise horse."
Adcock said Leestown bred 102 mares last season. The horse tops Louisiana's current general sire standings, according to the Louisiana Thoroughbred Breeders Association.
Leestown was a two-time stakes winner by Seattle Slew and a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Grand Slam.
