Curlin Tries for Earnings Mark at Belmont Park
Curlin will attempt to dethrone Cigar as North America's all-time leading money winner when he goes postward as a likely heavy choice in the 90th running of the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Saturday. With a win, the son of Smart Strike will become the first American thoroughbred to surpass $10 million in lifetime earnings. Among the steeds set to oppose the reigning Horse of the Year is Merchant Marine, a four-year-old gelding trained by H. Allen Jerkens. In 1998, Jerkens saddled Wagon Limit to a 34-1 upset of Skip Away, who was also trying to break Cigar's record in the Gold Cup. Saturday's race will be televised by ESPN, with a post time set for approximately 5:52 p.m. ET.
No Rest for the Weary
The Daily Racing Form's Dave Grening reports that if, as expected, raindrops keep falling on the heads of New York patrons at Belmont Park on Friday, Proudinsky may run in the $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational at the same track the following day - just two weeks after the five-year-old finished a close second to Big Brown in the Monmouth Stakes. Grening says, "a field as large as eight is possible for the Joe Hirsch," and names Grand Couturier, Dancing Forever, Presious Passion, Strike a Deal, Summer Patriot, Elusive Fort and Jade's Revenge as possible additional starters.
Mauralakana Tops Flower Bowl Entries
A small but select field headed by Mauralakana is shaping up for the $600,000 Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont Park. The Flower Bowl is one of - count 'em - five Grade I stakes events scheduled to be contested at the eastern facility on Saturday. The others are the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational, the Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational, the Vosburgh and the Beldame.
BC Preps Aplenty at Oak Tree
Belmont Park isn't the only track boasting a bounty of bold type this Saturday. The Oak Tree meeting at Santa Anita features six Grade I events - one more than its New York counterpart - including the Clement L. Hirsch Memorial Turf Championship, the Lady's Secret, Ancient Title, Oak Leaf, as well as the Yellow Ribbon Stakes and Goodwood Handicap. Marquee match-ups abound, as Hystericalady squares off against Zenyatta in the Lady's Secret; Street Boss faces Idiot Proof and the up-an-coming Cost of Freedom in the Ancient Title; and Black Mamba confronts Wait a While in the Yellow Ribbon.
The Red Mile Reunion
Muhammad Ali had Joe Frazier; Bill Russell had Wilt Chamberlain; Affirmed had Alydar and Mork had Mindy. For every great champion, it seems, there is a challenger that pushes him or her to the limit - one that helps define what a true champion is. For Somebeachsomewhere that foe is Art Official, the only pacer to ever defeat him. The two will be reunited again Saturday when they compete in separate heats of the $134,000 Bluegrass Stakes at The Red Mile. Somewhere Orson is smiling.
Deweycheatumnhowe Keeps on Trottin'
Somebeachsomewhere and Art Official aren't the only stars on The Red Mile card Saturday evening - Deweycheatumnhowe appears ready to shine as well, as he faces eight rivals in the trotting division of the Bluegrass Stakes. Defeated just once in nine starts this year, after going undefeated as a juvenile, the son of Muscles Yankee has banked nearly $1.3 million more than the rest of the field combined.
Big Stakes at Mohawk
As usual, there are some nice standardbred races scheduled north of the border this weekend, including the Ontario Sire Stakes Gold Final for two-year-old colts and geldings and the Milton Stakes for older fillies and mares. Both races are pacing events.
