In my lifetime, I am not sure that I have seen so many revered teams and individuals take a fall from grace in such a short time. I am not talking about myself and how I failed to repeat many of my fantasy football championships, or to even make the playoffs in some cases, in my personal leagues. That was pre-destined when I drafted Clinton Portis and Brandon Jacobs as the backbone of many of those teams. I refer to the true teams and individuals who were seemingly above reproach and preordained to continue greatness. Some of which I speak of are listed below.
·Tim Tebow. Of course, he had an amazing 4-year career; 2 National Championships, 3 invites to NYC for the Heisman presentation (winning 1). But, his fate was to go out on top with another National Championship and record-tying second Heisman. However, Alabama took care of the former (in humiliating fashion) and no way he closes the latter. Smatter of fact, I doubt he places above 4th. I just hope he doesn't start crying again. That scene in the SEC Championship was disturbing. Maybe he was under the impression that women vote on the Heisman.
·Tiger Woods. No reason to really delve into this topic as it is all over the news and sports talk. I did read today that he was nailing a porn star or two. Truthfully, what is the job description for “porn star”? If you are on film having sex and that film is being sold, it seems that you are described as a “porn star”. Is that all it takes to gain that job title or do you need to measure up to some minimal qualifications? Regardless, it sure seems that Tiger kept busy while away from golf rehabbing from knee surgery. Sadly, one has to wonder if Elin is so bad in that sack that he would risk his reputation and legacy. Obviously, the cash it has, and will, cost him is of no concern.
·The Pittsburgh Steelers. I can faintly remember the Steelers defense ever giving up a 4th-quarter lead, especially at home, but to give up FIVE, in the same year, and drop to 6-6 by allowing the pathetic Oakland Raiders to treat your vaunted defense as an afterthought boggles my mind. One player should not make THAT much of a difference, but Troy Polamalu does not give up a TD pass to Louis Murphy to lose a game in the waning seconds at home. So much for "Unreleasing Hell".
·Joe Girardi’s Sliding School. Ok, this one is just a joke, but I thought it was funny when Jets Coach Rex Ryan brought Yankees Skipper Joe Girardi in to work with QB Mark Sanchez on the proper form to slide. It was even funnier when Sanchez hurt his knee on a poorly executed slide just a few days later. Good thing for Girardi that the Yankee hitters belt a lot of home runs.
I could go on with more, such as USC and their Pac-10 losses this year or the New England Patriots and their mediocre season, but many people are actually taking great joy in those shortcomings. I guess those folks are bored with the debacle of Notre Dame football and need a new target.
Well, many fantasy football leagues will be starting playoffs this week, which means the season has come to an end for those not participating in a league with a Toilet Bowl. If you are still active, you want to make sure you have a properly stacked bench at this point in the season. So, drop that extra defense or kicker and add to your pool of available bench players.
Waiver Wire Finds:
QB: Chad Henne (MIA) – With the Jets floundering and the Steelers and Ravens playing back to the pack, the Dolphins are still in the playoff hunt. They have been slowly expanding their offensive plays are starting to slip back into a traditional dropback passing style. Henne has a big arm and they are letting him use it, as evidenced by his 300-yard, 2-TD outing against the Patriots.
RB: Jerome Harrison (CLE) – With Jamal Lewis’ career ending with a whimper with him heading to the IR, the Browns are committed to finding out what Harrision can do as they head into the off-season. He has showed occasional bouts of productivity, including his 2-TD receiving effort against San Diego last week. This week’s matchup is not the best for him, but, if you need help, grab him. If not, stash him.
WR: Davone Bess (MIA) – See Chad Henne! Miami has longed for a go-to receiver for years and are starting to see one in Bess. He lit up the fields in the WAC for Hawaii and has started bringing those skills to the NFL. This week’s game at Jacksonville is a good time to trust him.
WR: Devin Thomas (WASH) – The ‘Skins are out of running backs for the year and are playing for next year. So, they have been testing Jason Campbell and their slew of second-tier receivers. I can see them letting Santana Moss and Antwaan Randel El go when the year is over and moving to taller receivers. That is where Thomas is. He is 6’2” and has been waiting for action. The ‘Skins slowly started looking him way in the Red Zone, but now seeing starting receiver Looks and output (7/100/2 last week).
