The US 4 X 100 Meter Relay Team after Winning Olympic Gold in the 2008 Olympics
American swimmer Michael Phelps is 2-for-2 so far in his hunt to win eight gold medals in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and the next leg of his mission will come in a grueling three-event-in-two-days span, when he opens with the 200m freestyle event, followed by the 4×200m freestyle relay, and concludes with the 200m butterfly.
Phelps is far and away the favorite in the 200m freestyle, as he owns the current world record in this event with a time of 1:43:86, which he set in Australia last year. After warming up with a world-record swim to snatch the gold in the 100m freestyle, another record in the 200m is almost expected from this phenom.
Phelps is also a member of the 4×200 freestyle relay team that also set a world record with a time of 7:03:24 last year in Australia, one of an amazing five world records Phelps set during the World Championships in Melbourne. Phelps and the Americans are favored at -200 to take gold in this event.
Finally, Phelps will end a busy time of the Olympics for him with the 200m butterfly, and not surprisingly, this is another event in which the 23-year-old holds the world record. Phelps’ time of 1:52:09 in Melbourne last year is the benchmark in this event, and it would surprise no one if he set the bar even higher for future swimmers, or even himself.
